- H. L. O'Kelley, one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of this section, died at the residence of his son, William O'Kelley, in the Cheswell Cotton Mill Village, on Friday, January 22. Hugh Lee O'Kelley was born October 19, 1819, and therefore, had just passed his 84th milestone of his life's journey. Mr. O'Kelley's wife was Miss Martha Harbin, a daughter of the late Thos. Harbin. She died several years ago at an advanced age. Ten children were born unto this union, eight of whom survive. The eldest son died during the Civil War. The surviving children are Benjamin, Wilburn, J. S., Lemuel, William, Nancy, wife of J. L. Bryan; Susan, wife of B. A. Burns, and Mrs. William Newell. He leaves scores of grand and great grandchildren - the exact number not known, as one of the sons settled in Tennessee many years ago. The deceased leaves one brother, B. F. O'Kelley, who resides near West Union. Mr. O'Kelley was not afflicted with any disease. The good old gentleman was sitting in his chair when the angel of death came and extinguished his light. He was a man of honesty and his word was good as his bond. Mr. O'Kelley united with the old Westminster Church about 60 years ago. He was one of the charter members of Chauga church, where his membership was at the time of his death. He had served that church many years as deacon and clerk. He was a Master Mason, having united with Blue Ridge Lodge, No 92, at Walhalla, before the Westminster Lodge was organized. He was a devoted member of the craft and could nearly always be seen at a Masonic burial in this community, assisting in paying the last tribute of respect to his deceased brother. Mr. O'Kelley had resided on Chauga, where J. L. Bryan now lives, for the past fifty years or more. His body was buried in the Chauga Cemetery on Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock, the services being conducted by A. P. Marett. Mr. O'Kelley will be missed. Peace to his memory! [4]
